Umubyeyi Mairesse’s All Your Children, Scattered follows three generations of family fractured by the genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda, while her new memoir, The Convoy, reconstructs her escape, aged fifteen, from the 1994 genocide. A hip-hop star in France, Gael Faye’s internationally acclaimed novels, including the multi-award-winning, Small Country and Prix Renaudot-winning Jacaranda, explore childhood, memory and Rwanda’s long journey towards healing. In this very special conversation with Philippe Sands, Fate and Umubyeyi will explore writing as a tool for survival and how literature can reveal truths that history cannot, in the context of current conflicts, including Russia/Ukraine and Israel/Palestine. In addition, what justice, healing, and understanding can be found on the written page, and where does the balance lie between individual healing and collective recovery?
