About

The Toronto Poetry Slam returns with a high-energy spectacle of original content to leave you feeling inspired!

Since 2005, TPS has featured some of Canada’s best and most engaging spoken word artists and next generation stars. Presented in partnership with Toronto Poetry Project, this hit slam is a competition in two rounds with multiple contestants, judged by members of the audience. Anyone is welcome to sign up to perform in any style.

Want to take part? Sign up will take place 1 hour before the event in the Victoria College Lobby.

Toronto Poetry Slam Competition Rules

Standard poetry slam rules apply. The competition will consist of two rounds, with the top half of participants advancing to the second round based on their scores.

Competition Rules:

  • All poems must be original work written by the performing poet.
  • No props, costumes, or musical accompaniment are permitted.
  • Each poem must be performed within three minutes, with a 10-second grace period.
  • A 0.5-point penalty will be deducted for every 10 seconds beyond 3 minutes and 10 seconds.

Scoring and Prizes:

Scores from both rounds will be combined to determine the final rankings. The top three poets will receive prizes.

Please note: If you plan to compete, you must prepare two original poems for the evening in case you advance to the second round.
