There is nothing quite like the moments in our childhood when we first fall in love with a story, widen our world view and try to see things from someone else’s perspective. Reading lets our children occupy a different space; the middle of a story offers a multitude of possibilities, of journeys, imaginings and opportunities. Sharing, listening to, talking about and challenging our stories is transformative.
Research shows that regular readers:
- experience better lives and contribute to their communities more;
- are more than 3 times as likely as non-readers to visit museums, attend plays or concerts, and create artworks of their own;
- are more likely to play sports, attend sporting events, or do outdoor activities, and;
- are more than twice as likely as non-readers to volunteer or do charity work.

TIFA Kids brings together authors, illustrators, actors and storytellers to create dynamic events that explore what it is to be young in the world today, how to manage the highs, the lows, the joys and the disappointments. Programmes provide a playground of words and stories, free for all to enjoy, where young booklovers – and those young at heart – can meet and hear from acclaimed authors and illustrators and discover their next new read.
The 2023 Toronto International Festival of Authors (TIFA) led young readers on fanciful flights of imagination September 21 – October 1, 2023 at Harbourfront Centre. Dozens of free, family-friendly events and activities introduced celebrated story creators to young book-lovers, from singing and dancing along with popular CBC Kids musical duo Jeremy & Jazzy, to soaring through the Toronto skies on an interactive swing set with All or Nothing Aerial Dance Theatre, as well as crafting workshops, storytime readings and interactive installations.
Join us for the next 11-day festival edition September 19–29, 2024.
Starting on GivingTuesday, the global day of giving, TIFA will kick off our year-end matching gift campaign. From November 28 to December 31, we will raise critical funds and awareness for our highest priority need, TIFA Kids. Thanks to the generous support of Gail and Mark Appel, Founding Donors of TIFA Kids, every donation up to $10,000 will be doubled, making twice the impact.
Don’t miss your chance to make twice the impact! Please consider making a gift today at https://festivalofauthors.ca/donate in support of the free, fun and educational events that foster a love of reading and storytelling in this digital era. Big or small, every donation makes a difference to Toronto families who depend on TIFA Kids.
