This session explores what it means to write in a language other than English or French in Canada, where most literary opportunities, resources, and audiences are concentrated in the country’s two official languages. How do newcomer and refugee writers writing in languages other than the two official languages, continue to develop their practice and reach readers? Do they feel pressure to transition into English or French? The conversation considers how writing in a new linguistic and cultural context may shape a writer’s subjects, style, and relationship with their audience, as well as what can be lost, gained, or transformed through translation. It also asks how Canada’s literary institutions might better recognize and support writing produced beyond English and French.
