About

All the world is Shakespeare’s stage. Join Daniel Hahn and Ann-Marie MacDonald as they discuss translating and adapting the bard. Hahn is a translator who travelled the world talking about Shakespeare with actors and writers alike for his book If This Be Magic, discussing the challenges when it comes to translating meaning, rhythm, and clever wordplay, and how his works are reinvented while still maintaining Shakespeare’s voice. MacDonald’s award-winning play Goodnight Desdemona (Good Morning Juliet), is a modern revisioning of Shakepeare’s Othello and Romeo and Juliet, where the main character, Constance, finds herself on a quest for self-identity while trying to save Desdemona and Juliet from their horrible fates. Together, the authors will reflect on the art of adaptation and telling Shakespeare’s stories with your own words.

How does Shakespeare remain Shakespeare when every word is changed? In this playful, meditative exploration of translating the world’s most beloved playwright, Daniel Hahn guides us through the magic of bringing the Bard to a global audience. "For those who care deeply about language, and about Shakespeare. . .

Goodnight Desdemona (Good Morning Juliet) is an exuberant comedy and feminist revisioning of Shakespeare’s Othello and Romeo and Juliet. It takes us from a dusty office in Canada’s Queen’s University, into the fraught and furious worlds of two of Shakespeare’s best-known tragedies, and turns them upside-down.
