Join us in a conversation with two young Arab writers: Mazen Maarouf, a Palestinian-Icelandic writer, and poet whose short story collection “Gunmen’s Jokes” was longlisted for the Man Booker International Prize in 2019, and Mohamed Khelifi, a Tunisian writer and lawyer based in New York, whose novel “Flee” was awarded the Rambourg Award. In this session, the authors will discuss the impact of immigration on the writer’s imagination, style, and the topics they choose to write on.

Some Arab writers emigrated from their countries early when they were young, they carved their creative identities away in exile and diaspora, and they started speaking languages ​​other than Arabic, but they continued to write and publish in the Arab world. Does living in exile increase the responsibilities of writers towards their homelands. Is the Arab writer doomed to live anywhere as a political being? What advantages do the Arab writers get when writing in the Diaspora, and what weighs them down?

جر سلاسل الذاكرة: حوار مع الكاتبين مازن معروف ومحمد خليفي

انضمّوا إلينا في حوار مع كاتبين من الأجيال الشابة: مازن معروف كاتب ومترجم وشاعر فلسطيني-آيسلندي الذي ترشحت مجموعته القصصية «نكات المسلحين» إلى القائمة الطويلة لجائزة مان بوكر الدولية في عام 2019 ومحمد خليفي كاتب ومحام تونسي مقيم في نيويورك الذي حصلت روايته “هرب” على جائزة رامبورغ. في هذه الجلسة سوف نطرح أسئلة حول أثر الغربة المبكرة على خيال الكاتب وأسلوبه والمواضيع التي يطرحها.

هاجر بعض الكتاب العرب بلدانهم مبكرا وهم شباب، لينحتوا هوياتهم الإبداعية بعيدا في المنافي والشتات، وصاروا يتكلمون لغات أخرى غير العربية لكنهم ظلوا يكتبون بها وينشرون في العالم العربي. وكأن العيش في المنافي يزيد من مسؤوليات الكتّاب تجاه أوطانهم الأولى. هل محكوم على الكاتب العربي أن يعيش في أي مكان بصفته كائنا سياسيا؟ وهل هو مجبرا فعلا على حمل أثقال الداخل أكثر من الكاتب في الداخل؟ ما الذي تخفف منه الكاتب العربي في المهجر وما الذي أثقله؟
