TIFA’s most provocative conversation series returns. Critical Conversations brings together authors and industry experts in candid conversation to examine the facets of culture and politics that shape the world around us and the books we read. Are we seeing the death of the newsstand? If so, what are its implications for how and why we consume our news and culture? The magazine racks are gone from supermarkets, and news agents just sell lottery tickets and bottled water. What are the implications for a well-informed public? What does it mean to lose something that was both ephemeral and profoundly powerful? Will newsstands become like record shops selling vinyl? We worry about the dominance of social media for people’s attention and advertisers’ dollars but what can we do if we hit these simple physical barriers to access? Moderated by Kyle Wyatt, Editor of Literary Review of Canada, join a panel including Rachel Pisani, manager of Queen Books; Nicola Hamilton, art director and proprietor of Issues Magazine Shop; and John Cruickshank the former publisher of The Chicago Sun-Times, CBC News, Toronto Star and former chairman of the Canadian Journalism Foundation and former co-chairman of the Canadian Press.
