Mazen Maarouf
Mazen Maarouf (1978) is a Palestinian-Icelandic writer, poet, translator and journalist. Born in Beirut to a family of Palestinian refugees, Maarouf holds a maîtrise degree in Chemistry. Mazen has published three collections of poetry: The Camera Doesn’t Capture Birds (2004 and 2010), Our Grief Resembles Bread (2000) and An Angel Suspended On a Clothesline (2012). He is also the author of three short story collections: Jokes for the Gunmen (1st edition 2016, 2nd edition 2017) and Rats that Licked the Karate Champion’s Ears (1st and 2nd print 2017, 3rd print 2018), A Sunshine on the bench of Substitute (2022), and a novella titled The Curse of Mudballs Boy (2020). He was awarded and LiteraturLana prize for poetry in Italy (2015) and Al-Multaqa prize for Arab short story collection for Jokes for the Gunmen (2016). Jokes for the Gunmen has been translated into 17 languages and longlisted for Man Booker International Prize 2019, longlisted for Edinburgh Book Festival Award and shortlisted for Saif Ghobash BanipalPrize. He currently lives between Reykjavik and Beirut.
مازن معروف: قاص وشاعر ومترجم فلسطيني. مواليد بيروت عام 1978. حائز على ماجستير في الكيمياء من الجامعة اللبنانية. كتب في النقد الأدبي والتشكيلي والمسرح والرقص المعاصر لصحف ومجلات ثقافية في لبنان والعالم العربي.
له ثلاث مجموعات شعرية هي “كأن حزننا خبز” (دار الفارابي)، “الكاميرا لا تلتقط العصافير” (دار الجمل، ط2) و”ملاك على حبل غسيل” (دار رياض الريس). وثلاث مجموعات قصصية هي “نكات للمسلحين” (دار رياض الريس – 2016)، “الجرذان التي لحست أذني بطل الكاراتيه” (دار المتوسط – 2017) و”كيوم مشمس على دكّة الإحتياط” (صدرت مؤخراً عن دار هاشيت أنطوان – بيروت). كما صدرت له بترجمة إنكليزية رواية قصيرة (نوفيلا) بعنوان “لعنة صبي كرات الطين”. حاز على جائزة الملتقى للقصة القصيرة عام 2016 عن مجموعته القصصية “نكات للمسلحين” التي تُرجمتْ لسبع عشرة لغة ووصلتْ إلى القائمة الطويلة لجائزة مان بوكر الدولية عام 2019. كما حاز جائزة لاناليتيراتورا للشعر في إيطاليا عام 2014. تُرجِمتْ مختارات من شعره إلى أكثر من عشر لغات. كما نقل عدداً من القصائد لشعراء من آيسلندا والعالم، والقصص القصيرة والروايات إلى العربية. يعيش في ركيافيك، آيسلندا.
