Learn how to craft compelling stories and bring captivating characters to life through hands-on lessons from acclaimed authors and industry experts.

World-building for Literary Fiction

Genre writers take world-building very seriously, and so should writers of literary fiction. World-building, the world your characters move in, is crucial if your fiction is to be an immersive experience for the reader. It is also one of the ways you show your distinctiveness as a writer; two brilliant writers portraying the same city will produce two distinct cities. Finally, world-building is of ethical urgency in the age of the Anthropocene, which demands that we notice the environments we have created and that we move in.

In this 90-minute creative writing masterclass, acclaimed author Siddhartha Deb will provide a choice of short story writing prompts that will urge you to do some word-building, and facilitate a discussion of the work produced and of word-building in the work of published writers. All writing levels welcome.

Presented by TIFA in partnership with the Humber School for Writers.
