David Bradford was the only poet among this year’s Delegates, his work having appeared in Prairie Fire, Vallum, Poetry Is Dead, The Capilano Review, The Unpublished City (Book*hug, 2017) and more. In attending a variety of Festival events about poetry, prose and prizes, David saw an opportunity to reflect on the bargain between authors and readers.
Novelist, screenwriter and copywriter Emily Saso (The Weather Inside) is no stranger to the Toronto International Festival of Authors. Jason Loo is a Toronto-based artist and comics creator most widely known for this work on The Pitiful Human-Lizard, a superhero comic set in Toronto. The series, which is published through Chapterhouse Comics, was nominated for the 2018 Doug Wright Spotlight Award! You never know when inspiration will strike or when a kernel of an idea will grow into something beyond your wildest dreams. This is especially true for German author Melanie Raabe, who was having dinner with a friend in Cologne when she heard a story about an author who refused to leave their home. Seeing the creative potential in that conceit, Raabe jotted the idea down and soon after began working on the novel that would change her life: Die Falle (The Trap).
Cristina Ali Farah has garnered much acclaim throughout her career for her profound and emotionally-resonant explorations of home, family, trauma and reconciliation in the context of immigration and colonialism. No matter what form of writing Farah chooses to experiment with – novels, short stories, poetry or plays – she ultimately sees her writing as an important vehicle for communicating and disseminating a certain set of experiences that aren’t readily available for readers to discover and learn about.
