Bengalis are one of the most vibrant community groups in Canada, known for their many notable writers and poets, and countless literary activities throughout the year. Among the hundred-plus published Bengali writers, a good number live in Toronto and its adjacent cities. Three senior writers from the community, including Dilip Chakraborty, Sudhir Saha and Roksana Lais, will share their ideas and experiences writing in their mother tongue Bengali on foreign soil. This session will be moderated by noted writer and curator Subrata Kumar Das.

Featured Authors

Dilip Chakraborty is an 83 year old writer. He has studied at various educational institutes, including Scottish Church College, St. Paul’s CollegeKolkata University and Oxford UniversityHe obtained a masters degree in English from Calcutta University and Rajasthan University, and a PhD in English from Aligarh Muslim University. He has taught undergraduate and postgraduate courses and worked as a Principal at four colleges in India. He has published three books and enjoys music, reading and travelling.

জীবনের অর্থ যার কাছে চলতে থাকা, থেমে থাকা নয় তেমনি কর্মচঞ্চল এক মানুষের নাম সুধীর সাহা, যিনি অধিক পরিচিত মেজর সুধীর সাহা নামে। ১৯৫৭ সালের ৩০ এপ্রিল ঢাকা জেলার নবাবগঞ্জ থানাধীন শিকারী পাড়া নামের এক অখ্যাত গ্রামে জন্ম নিয়েছিলেন বর্তমানের এই খ্যাতিমান মানুষটি। তার চঞ্চলতা, দৃঢ়তা আর ব্যক্তিসত্ত্বা বুঝি ছোট বেলায়ই ধরা পড়ে অন্যদের চোখে। সেই ছোট্ট বেলাতেই কেউ তাকে দারোগা, কেউ বিচারক ইত্যাদি বিভিন্ন নামে ডাকতেন। কিন্তু সুধীর সাহা ছিলেন নির্বিকার। মধ্যবিত্ত পরিবারের মুখ উঁচু করা সন্তানটি প্রতি শ্রেণিতে প্রথম স্থান অধিকার করলে পরিবারের মানুষগুলোরও চোখ পড়ে তার ওপর।    www.sudhirsaha.com

Roksana Lais is an author, poet and visual artist who primarily writes in Bangla, but many times has her writings translated into English. Roksana’s different works explore various themes including international politics, history, family dynamics, discrimination and several other societal issues. She has published seven books — five novels, one book of short stories and a poetry book: In the Stream of the Unknown (2008), Connection (2009), A Journey of Light (2011), Golden Light in a Rainy Moment (2011), Blue Water in The Moonlight (2007) and In Search of Dream City (1987), Letter to Sky (2019).

Subrata Kumar Das, an immigrant in Canada since 2013, is an author and curator. A member of the Writers’ Union of Canada and Literary Translators Association of Canada, Subrata has 29 books to his credit. Subrata’s Bengali book on CanLit has been hugely acclaimed by the Bengali literature-lovers living in Canada and Bangladesh. The initiator of Bangladeshi Novels (bdnovels.org), the first website on Bengali literature in 2003, Subrata is the recipient of Nalanda Best Canadian Bengali Author Award at Canadian South Asian Literary Festival 2023 and Gayatri GaMarsh Memorial Award in 2018. He was shortlisted as Best Canadian Immigrant Award in 2021.
