90 mins

Learn how to craft compelling stories and bring captivating characters to life through hands-on lessons from acclaimed authors and industry experts.

On Seeing: What Observation Means to Poetry

In “On Seeing,” we will look at close observation in poetry and how it relates to emotional expression. Participants will look at the contrast between an observational tone (Elizabeth Bishop would be an example) and more confessional poetry (such as Anne Sexton or Sylvia Plath, among many others).

This 90-minute creative writing masterclass, led by Kate Cayley, will look at how deep observation, deep seeing, can be a form of recognition of the world rather than self-erasure. How do we describe what we see, rather than just describing ourselves? This question will be approached through writing exercises and lively discussion of what a poem does and how it does it. All writing levels welcome.

Presented by TIFA in partnership with the Humber School for Writers.
