Meet storytellers from unique communities around the world and across the local neighbourhoods of Toronto in the World in Other Words. Martha Bátiz will sit down with a group of Spanish writers, including Mexican poet and Creative Exchange (ICE Americas) founder Salvador Alanis and award-winning Canadian translator of Spanish literature Anne McLean, to hear about their experiences with writing, translating and publishing stories in Spanish.

Due to weather conditions, this event will take place inside Harbourfront Centre’s main building.

Featured Authors

Martha Bátiz is an award-winning writer, translator, and professor of Spanish language in literature. She is the author of four books, including the story collection Plaza Requiem, winner of an International Latino Book Award, and the novella The Wolf’s Mouth, winner of the Casa de Teatro Prize. Born and raised in Mexico City, she lives in Toronto.

Salvador Alanis (b. Mexico City) is a poet and cultural promoter. His work combines visual arts, video, performance and film. He has been a fellow of the National Fund for Culture and the Arts on four occasions, and his work in electronic media has won multiple international awards. His books, written in Spanish, have been translated into English and French. He has collaborated with magazines and newspapers in Mexico and Spain. He is the co-founder of the Institute for Creative Exchange in Toronto, and editor of ICE Press. He directed and produced the documentary Unfold: Mexican artists of the 90s.

Anne McLean studied history in London, Ontario and literary translation in London, England, and now lives in Toronto, where she translates Latin American and Spanish novels, short stories, travelogues, memoirs and other writings by authors including Héctor Abad, Javier Cercas, Julio Cortázar and Evelio Rosero.  Novels she translated have twice been awarded both the Independent Foreign Fiction Prize and the Premio Valle Inclán. She won the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award with Juan Gabriel Vásquez for The Sound of Things Falling and was shortlisted for the Booker International Prize with the same author for The Shape of the Ruins.
