Beata Umubyeyi Mairesse was born in Rwanda and survived the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi before moving to France. She is an award-winning author of novels, poetry, short stories, and non-fiction. Her debut novel, All Your Children, Scattered, won the Prix des Cinq Continents de la Francophonie and was longlisted for the PEN Translation Prize. Her acclaimed memoir, The Convoy (translated by Ruth Diver), details her escape from Rwanda and her search for archival evidence of the event. Her latest book is La solidarité des ébranlés (2026).
