Music fans won’t want to miss this fascinating exploration of Canada’s contemporary music scene with industry insiders and authors Michael Barclay and Rollie Pemberton. Through exclusive interviews and extensive research, Barclay presents an unprecedented account of Canadian music’s climb to coolness in the early 2000s in Hearts on Fire: Six Years That Changed Canadian Music 2000-2005. Arcade Fire, Feist, Tegan and Sara; and Alexisonfire were the tip of the iceberg that launched the golden age of Canadian indie rock world-wide. In Bedroom Rapper, Pemberton (also known as writer, rapper, producer, poet and activist Cadence Weapon) traces his roots from recording beats in his mom’s attic in Edmonton to performing with some of the most recognizable names in rap and electronic music, including Del La Soul, Public Enemy, Mos Def, Questlove and Diplo. The former poet laureate of Edmonton and 2021 Polaris Prize-winning musician’s tumultuous story of surviving the music industry resonates with the joy of finding oneself and the anticipation of fulfilling a dream.
