A good number of Bengali poets living throughout Canada have also achieved recognition back home. Canadian Bengali poets, including Shekhor Gomes, Anjuman Rosy, Sheuli Jahan and Kazi Helal, will participate in this Reading Bengali Poems session. They will recite their own creations along with the Bengali transcreations. Noted writer and curator Subrata Kumar Das will present the Bengali poets.

Featured Authors

Shekhor Gomes has been writing poems in Bangla for a long time. A book of poetry named Monkolpo which means Verses of Mind was published in 2016. He writes essays too, mainly on films. All of these essays were published in Bangla Weeklies and Magazines. Shekhor is an elocutionist too.

Anjuman Rosy followed in the footsteps of her late father Abdul Matin Prodhan, who had a strong love for poetry and literature. She studied Bengali literature at Dhaka University. Currently, she is living in Canada with her two kids. Anjuman Rosy has actively participated in various cultural activities in the Bengali community and even during busy times she continued her writting. So far she has published four books of poetry, two books of short stories, one book of prose and one memorial book. Writing is her passion. At the present tme her writing is mostly about women rights and other social activists.

Sheuli Jahan is a poet and writer of Bengali descent. Her poetic creations in Bengali encompass a diverse array of themes, with a primary focus on nature and humanity. She has two poetry books: Ashar Bagane Neel Projapoti (2015), and Droher Sat Rang (2016). Her works, including poems, stories and essays, have published into anthologies, Bengali newspapers, and magazines. To nurture her cultural roots within the diaspora, she actively engages with various cultural and social organizations in Toronto. Her upbringing was in Bangladesh, and she currently resides with her family in Toronto, Ontario.

Poet Quazi Helal was born in Bangladesh. He grew up in a bright cultural family. Family education was the foundation of his life. The subjects of his poetry encompass the struggles of people, time, politics, love, nature and history. His first published poetry book, Pan Kaurir Dubshantar, has been received warmly by readers and reciters. It has been extensively discussed in the renowned Bangladeshi news paper The Daily Star's book review. His second poetry book, Shrabonir Chokhe Stholpadma, was published in the 2023 and was also well accepted by the readers.

Subrata Kumar Das, an immigrant in Canada since 2013, is an author and curator. A member of the Writers’ Union of Canada and Literary Translators Association of Canada, Subrata has 29 books to his credit. Subrata’s Bengali book on CanLit has been hugely acclaimed by the Bengali literature-lovers living in Canada and Bangladesh. The initiator of Bangladeshi Novels (bdnovels.org), the first website on Bengali literature in 2003, Subrata is the recipient of Nalanda Best Canadian Bengali Author Award at Canadian South Asian Literary Festival 2023 and Gayatri GaMarsh Memorial Award in 2018. He was shortlisted as Best Canadian Immigrant Award in 2021.
