Displacement and Diaspora: Planting New Roots

10:40am

Saturday, September 30, 2023

Loft 1

90 mins

Similarities and differences across various diaspora communities in Canada in general and Toronto in particular will be uncovered through the examination of three distinct groups. Assimilation, connectedness and belonging are themes revealed through an exploration of Toronto’s Ukranian/Russian Jewish community and Canada’s expansive Lebanese diaspora. Also, an analysis of sustainability initiatives in Toronto’s largely racialized immigrant community of Taylor-Massey exposes inequities while also highlighting the unexpected intersection between displacement and sustainability.

This event is part of the annual interdisciplinary Humber Liberal Arts Conference.

Presenters:

Alexander Shvarts (Humber College)

Victoria Abboud (University of Windsor)

Zeina Seaifan (University of Toronto)
