Displacement and Diaspora: Belongingness and Identity in New Homelands

1:15pm

Saturday, September 30, 2023

Loft 1

90 mins

Fostering identity in the diaspora can be challenging and even confusing as assimilative forces often contradict the sense of belonging that displaced peoples feel for their communities. This panel tackles this issue through looking at the experiences of three different immigrant groups: professional Nigerian women in the United Kingdom, Assyrian youth across Canada, and Filipino students in Toronto. The challenges to success are specific to each group and their unique circumstances, but all are related in their desire to find and nurture a sense of belonging both within their diasporic communities and the broader societies of which they are now a part.

This event is part of the annual interdisciplinary Humber Liberal Arts Conference.

Presenters:

Cristina Guerrero (Humber College), co-presenting with Blaise Humblelaine Cabanban (Immigrant and Refugee Counselor)

Eamama Daniyal (York University)

Oluwabukola Abayomi (University of Portsmouth)
