Join us February 29 for the launch Derwin Mak‘s Mecha-Jesus and Other Stories (Brain Lag), a collection of twelve short tales of mystery, wonder, and horror. The event will be held at the Lillian H. Smith Branch of the Toronto Public Library in the Auditorium on the lower level. Drop in and enjoy a book reading and discussion.

Following the talk, Mak will do a live Q&A and book signing.

This is a free Toronto Lit Up Event and will be hosted by the Merril Collection of Science Fiction, Speculation and Fantasy. Doors will open at 6:15pm and the event will start at 6:30pm. No registration is required.

Copies of Mecha-Jesus and Other Stories will be available for sale at the event by Bakka Phoenix Books.


Toronto Lit Up is a multi-year initiative, started in 2016 by the Toronto International Festival of Authors and the Toronto Arts Council, to spotlight Toronto writers and empower local artists with career-building opportunities. Between April 2016 and March 2023, Toronto Lit Up has presented 165 events featuring over 200 Toronto authors and illustrators. Toronto Lit Up book launches take place throughout the year at venues across the city. Featured Authors

Derwin Mak's story "Transubstantiation" won the 2006 Aurora Award for Best Short Fiction. The Dragon and the Stars, an anthology that he co-edited with Eric Choi, won the 2011 Aurora Award for Best Related Work. Where the Stars Rise, an anthology that he co-edited with Lucas Law, won the Alberta Book Publishing Award for Speculative Fiction Book of the Year in 2018. Derwin also founded the cosplay competition at Anime North, Canada's largest anime convention. He has degrees in accounting and military history and was the first person to capture a Pokémon inside the Royal Canadian Military Institute.
