The two authors will speak to how they each managed to put a satirical, humorous spin on complex political issues in each of their latest novels. Nawaz offers up more infectiously likeable characters in Jameela Green Ruins Everything. When Jameela’s imam suddenly vanishes, she is certain he was taken by the CIA for torturous interrogation, and soon becomes entangled in an international plan targeting an egomaniacal leader of a terrorist organization. Syjuco will present I was the President’s Mistress!! – a fast-paced, animated and hilarious satire covering politics, faith, history, memory and the ongoing war over who determines the truth.

Featured Authors

Zarqa Nawaz is a Canadian producer for film and television, a published author, public speaker, journalist, and former broadcaster. She is the author of the memoir Laughing All the Way to the Mosque, which was shortlisted for the Leacock Medal for Humour, the Kobo Emerging Writer Prize, and two Saskatchewan Book Awards. She also created the hit CBC comedy series Little Mosque on the Prairie, the world’s first sitcom about a Muslim community living in the West, and is the creator and star of the forthcoming series Zarqa. Zarqa lives in Regina, Saskatchewan, with her loving but long-suffering family.

Miguel Syjuco is a Filipino writer, civil society advocate, and professor at New York University Abu Dhabi. His debut novel, Ilustrado, was a New York Times Notable Book of the Year and won the Man Asian Literary Prize and the Palanca Awards Grand Prize, his country’s top literary honor. He has worked as a contributing opinion writer for The International New York Times, written for many of the world’s most respected publications, and spoken on Philippine politics and culture at the World Forum for Democracy and the World Economic Forum. He serves on the advisory councils of both the Civitella Ranieri Foundation, an arts residency program, and the Resilience Fund, a project by the Global Initiative Against Transnational Organized Crime to empower communities most threatened by criminality.
