His new book celebrates the arc of his career, composed of 64 stories – 36 of which appear in English for the first time – from early stories that reflect the harshness of life under Portuguese colonialism, to magical tales of rural Africa, contemporary fables and more. A rare opportunity to hear “one of the greatest living writers in the Portuguese language” (The Millions).

Featured Authors

Mia Couto, born in Beira, Mozambique, directed the Mozambican state news agency during the years following independence from Portugal. Since the late 1980s, he has worked as an environmental biologist and a writer. Couto is the author of more than thirty books, which have been published in thirty-five countries. He has won major literary prizes including the 2013 Camōes Prize and the 2014 Neustadt International Prize for Literature. He was a finalist for the 2015 Man Booker International Prize and the 2017 International Dublin Literary Award. Mia Couto lives with his family in Maputo, Mozambique, where he works as an environmental consultant.

José Eduardo Agualusa is considered one of Africa’s most important writers. Both as a novelist and a reporter, Agualusa has become an important voice of his country. He has a weekly column in the prestigious Brazilian newspaper O Globo. His novel A General Theory of Oblivion was shortlisted for the Man Booker International Prize 2016 and was awarded the International Dublin Literary Award 2017. José Eduardo Agualusa is the winner of the National Prize for Culture and Arts in Angola 2019 in the area of literature. The jury underlined his contribution “to the emergence of the emancipated reader” and “to the strengthening of citizenship and freedom of expression.”
