Meet author and film documentarian Cheuk Kwan, as he takes you on a fascinating journey exploring the Chinese diaspora and identity through food. In conversation about his latest book, Have You Eaten Yet?, Kwan will take you on a worldwide tour of family-run Chinese restaurants through the personal stories of those who populate Chinese kitchens. The Hong Kong native’s passion for travel and his Chinese culture provide a unique lens through which to experience the ways that many Chinese immigrants maintain their ethnic identities in their new homes.

Cheuk Kwan
Cheuk Kwan was born in Hong Kong and grew up in Singapore and Japan. Immigrating to Canada in 1976 Kwan embarked upon a successful globe-trotting career in information technology. His international and diasporic upbringing gave him an early start in world travel and opportunities to meet people from numerous countries. Kwan’s five films from the Chinese Restaurants series—Song of the Exile, On the Islands, Three Continents, Latin Passions, and Beyond Frontiers—bring together his personal experiences, love of food and travel, and appreciation of the Chinese diaspora culture worldwide. Have You Eaten Yet? is inspired by the films.

Sang Kim
Sang Kim is an award-winning author, chef, restaurateur and TV personality. He is a regular food contributor on three national CTV shows. His new TV show, Searching with Chef Sang, exploring the relationships between food, culture, personal identity and community, will air October 2022 on TLN. His third book, a memoir about food, memory and the Korean-Canadian experience, Searching For (a village called) Love, will be released in 2024.
