Award-winning Canadian author, and Toronto’s 5th Poet Laureate, Anne Michaels will take you on a unique excavation of memory and time, through a revisiting of her international bestselling debut novel, Fugitive Pieces, in celebration of its 25th anniversary. Since 1996, Fugitive Pieces has won numerous accolades, such as the Toronto Book Award, the Guardian Fiction Award and the Orange Prize for Fiction, among many other Canadian and international awards. Fugitive Pieces was also adapted into an internationally released feature film. The work, which is not only one of the most beloved and most critically acclaimed books of our time, is also a novel of rare vision that is at once lyrical, sensual and profound. Anne Michaels will be interviewed by actor, writer and director Simon McBurney.

Anne Michaels is a novelist and poet. Her books are translated into more than fifty languages and have won dozens of international awards, including the Orange Prize, the Guardian Fiction Prize, and the Lannan Award for Fiction. Among many other honours she is a Guggenheim Fellow, has received honorary degrees, and has served as Toronto’s Poet Laureate. Her novel Fugitive Pieces was adapted as a feature film. Her most recent books include All We Saw, Infinite Gradation and Railtracks (co-written with John Berger). In 2020, her novel Fugitive Pieces was chosen for the BBC’s 100 Novels that Shaped the World.

Simon McBurney is an actor, writer, playwright and director of theatre, opera, film and dance. He is co-founder and artistic director of Complicité, is married, has three children and lives at the end of a valley in the West Country. Complicité creates work that strengthens human interconnection, using the complicity between performer and audience that is at the heart of the theatrical experience. Simon’s recent directing credits with Complicité includes Beware of Pity, The Encounter, The Master and Margarita, Shun-kin and A Disappearing Number. Founded in 1983, the Company has won over 50 major theatre awards worldwide.
