May Telmissany
May Telmissany is an Egyptian Canadian novelist established in Canada since 1998. She is Associate professor of Cinema and Arabic Studies in the Department of Communication, University of Ottawa. In 2021, Telmissany was awarded the prestigious medal of Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres of the French Republic in recognition of her literary and academic achievements. Telmissany published four novels and four short stories collections. Her first novel Dunyazad (London: Saqi Books, 2000) was translated into eight languages and won two prestigious literary awards in Egypt and in France. Her novels Heliopolis (Paris: Actes Sud 2002), Acapella (Paris: Actes Sud 2014) and Everyone Says I Love you (Cairo: Shorouq 2021) were highly acclaimed by critics worldwide. The later was shortlisted for the prestigious Arabic Booker Literary Award in 2023. Telmissany also wrote Ceci n’est pas un paradis. Chroniques nomades (Montreal, Mémoire d’encrier, 2017). In addition to fiction, Telmissany’s academic research spans a variety of topics in media and film theories including the representation of the popular neighborhood in cinema, the emergence of minor cinemas and transnational filmmaking, and the political contributions of the diasporic intellectuals during and after the 2011 Egyptian Revolution. She is the author of several academic books including La Hara dans le Cinéma Egyptien. Quartier populaire et identité nationale (2010/2014), and Counterpoints. Edward Said’s Legacy (2010). Her scholarly articles written in English, French and Arabic were published in prestigious academic periodicals in France, the UK, the USA, Canada, and Egypt.
مي التلمساني روائية مصرية كندية مقيمة في كندا منذ عام 1998، تعمل منذ عام 2006 أستاذ السينما والدراسات العربية في قسم الإعلام بجامعة أوتاوا، وهي حاصلة على وسام الفنون والآداب من الجمهورية الفرنسية برتبة فارس تقديراً لإنجازها الأدبي والأكاديمي. نشرت التلمساني أربع روايات وأربع مجموعات قصصية. ترجمت روايتها الأولى “دنيا زاد” (لندن: دار الساقي، 2000) إلى ثماني لغات وفازت بجائزتين أدبيتين مرموقتين في مصر وفرنسا. حازت رواياتها “هليوبوليس” (باريس: أكت سود، 2002) و”أكابيللا” (باريس: أكت سود، 2014) و”الكل يقول أحبك” (القاهرة: دار الشروق 2021) على استحسان القراء والنقاد في مختلف أنحاء العالم ورُشحت الرواية الأخيرة للقائمة الطويلة لجائزة البوكر العربية عام 2023. صدر للتلمساني أيضا كتاب يوميات بعنوان “للجنة سور” (مونتريال: ميموار دانكرييه، 2017) عن تجربة الهجرة من مصر إلى كندا. بالإضافة للأعمال الأدبية، نشرت التلمساني مجموعة متنوعة من الأبحاث الأكاديمية الهامة في مجال نظرية الميديا والسينما، تمثيل الحي الشعبي في السينما، سينما الأقليات وسينما المرأة العابرة للقوميات، والإسهامات الثقافية والسياسية لمثقفي الشتات أثناء وعقب ثورة يناير 2011 المصرية. للتلمساني العديد من الكتب الأكاديمية من بينها كتاب “كاونتربوينت: تراث إدوار سعيد الفكري” (كمبردج سكولارز للنشر، 2010) وكتاب “الحارة في السينما المصرية” (القاهرة: المركز القومي للترجمة، 2014). نُشرت دراساتها العلمية المكتوبة باللغات الإنجليزية والفرنسية والعربية في دوريات أكاديمية مرموقة في فرنسا والمملكة المتحدة والولايات المتحدة الأمريكية وكندا ومصر.
