Dwayne Morgan, a 2023 appointee of the Order of Ontario and two-time Canadian National Poetry Slam Champion, began his spoken word career in 1993. In 1994, he founded Up From The Roots to highlight African Canadian and urban artists. Morgan has earned multiple accolades, including the Toronto Arts Foundation’s Celebration of Cultural Life award, the African Canadian Achievement Award and the Harry Jerome Award. He has performed for high-profile figures, such as Barack Obama and Michaelle Jean, and shared stages with renowned artists like Russell Peters and Alicia Keys. Morgan has published 14 books, including two children’s titles and an inspirational memoir, and released 10 albums. His creative ventures include film, TV shows and a one-man play featured on CBC’s PlayMe Podcast. Morgan’s work has taken him across the globe, establishing him as a prominent figure in Toronto’s urban music scene and the global spoken word community.
