From Fact to Fiction – Cutting the Broadcloth of Events into the Pattern of Narrative
Traditional fiction has shape, whereas life is mostly one damned thing after another. Dad’s cranky opinions, a self-published memoir, an overheard phrase, the stories of ancestors. All of these rich sources have potential, but the last thing you want is to come across as the codger on the park bench telling a life story.
Author Antanas Sileika writes both memoir and fiction, the latter often based on life events. He will demonstrate one anecdote and its evolution to fiction, present a second event and invite the participants to fictionalize it, and then, if time permits, ask participants for brief life events or anecdotes to see if they can be transformed to narrative fiction.
This session may apply to all writers of traditional fiction, but it might also be particularly useful for writers of short stories. All writing levels welcome in this 90-minute creative writing masterclass.
