The past meets the present in new books by Diné author and filmmaker Romana Emerson and “Queen of French Noir” Johana Gustawsson. Emerson’s Shutter follows Rita, a forensic photographer in New Mexico who has become a portal for traumatized spirits to connect with the living. Gustawsson’s The Bleeding is a haunting novel that connects the lives of three women from 1899, 1949 and 2002 through discoveries involving black magic, secret societies and spiritism.

Featured Authors

Ramona Emerson is a Diné writer and filmmaker originally from Tohatchi, New Mexico. She has a bachelor’s in Media Arts from the University of New Mexico and an MFA in Creative Writing from the Institute of American Indian Arts. After starting in forensic videography, she embarked upon a career as a photographer, writer and editor. She is an Emmy nominee, a Sundance Native Lab Fellow, a Time-Warner Storyteller Fellow, a Tribeca All-Access Grantee and a WGBH Producer Fellow. In 2020, Emerson was appointed to the Governor’s Council on Film and Media Industries for the State of New Mexico. She currently resides in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Born in Marseille, France, and with a degree in Political Science, Johana Gustawsson has worked as a journalist for the French and Spanish press and television. Her critically acclaimed Roy & Castells series, including Block 46, Keeper and Blood Song, has won the Plume d’Argent, Balai de la découverte, Balai d’Or and Prix Marseillais du Polar awards, and is now published in 28 countries.
