Award-winning Scottish author Liam McIlvanney will take the TIFA virtual stage to present The Heretic, a story set seven years after the events of his popular 2018 novel, The Quaker. It is 1976 in Glasgow and tensions, violence and paranoia run high as Detective Duncan McCormack, who has returned to the city, is in dogged pursuit of gangland bosses when a series of violent murders among the city’s poor and destitute sparks an investigation connected to the past. Liam McIlvanney is the winner of the Saltire First Book Award and the Ngaio Marsh Award for Best Crime Novel. He is a regular contributor to publications including the London Review of Books, the Times Literary Supplement, and the Guardian. He is Stuart Professor of Scottish Studies at the University of Otago, New Zealand, where he lives with his wife and four sons.

Roland Gulliver is the Director of the Toronto International Festival of Authors, and a leading international figure in the literature sector with over 12 years’ experience at the Edinburgh International Book Festival as Associate Director. His programming explores the potential of live performance, alongside commissions for new multimedia storytelling. Gulliver champions communities by facilitating access and empowerment, and creating spaces for authors and audiences to engage in discussion. He is on the Board of Directors for the Toronto Arts Council and Chair of their Literary Advisory Committee, and is a Member of the Academy for the Walter Scott Prize for Historical Fiction.
