Through multiple perspectives in their books, Canadian Elise Levine and Cameroonian Léonora Miano explore the impact of past events on our current lives, and the challenges that come with moving forward. In Levine’s Say This, the lives of two families become intertwined through a horrific murder, each struggling to come to terms with the pain and trauma the murderer has left behind. In Miano’s Twilight of Torment, four women speak to the same absent man – his mother, partner, friend and younger sister – each examining their journey and story as they intersect with many factors, including femininity and the long-term effects of a harrowing history for Africans today.

Featured Authors

Elise Levine is the author of the story collection This Wicked Tongue, the novels Blue Field and Requests and Dedications, and the story collection Driving Men Mad. Her work has also appeared in publications including Ploughshares, Blackbird, The Gettysburg Review and Best Canadian Stories. She lives in Baltimore, MD, where she teaches in the MA in Writing program at Johns Hopkins University.

Born in Douala, Cameroon, in 1973, Léonora Miano is one of the most important voices in francophone literature. Novelist, playwright, and essayist, she is the author of nearly twenty books in which she explores singular and universal experiences of sub-Saharan or Afro-descendant peoples. She received the prix Fémina and the Grand prix du roman métis in 2013 for her novel Season of the Shadow, which was published to great acclaim by Seagull Books in 2018. Miano conceptualized and curates the Quilombola series of books at Seagull, and is also the founder and director of Quilombo Publishing based in Lomé, Togo. Léonora Miano’s Festival appearance is generously supported by the French Embassy.
