About

TIFA’s World in Other Words event series is back. Changing language or regional focus every few years, this is the second year spotlighting Arabic writers.

Discover the vibrant stories of resilience and identity with author Danny Ramadan and author/illustrator Barrack Zailaa Rima. Novelist Ramadan’s memoir offers a personal journey through the life of a queer Syrian refugee. From his tumultuous experiences in Damascus and Cairo to his quest for belonging in Vancouver, Ramadan’s account in Crooked Teeth defies typical refugee narratives, blending joy and sorrow. Beirut by Barrack Zailaa Rima (translated by Carla Calarge) is a stunning graphic novel trilogy that explores the layered history of a beloved city. Through poetic illustrations and vivid storytelling, Rima presents Beirut as a living, breathing city filled with past glories and present struggles.
