Life Through Language: Bengali writers in Canada

Meet the authors writing in languages that represent unique communities from around the world and across the local neighbourhoods of Toronto. This event will introduce you to authors Asoke Chakravarty, Akbar Hussain, Syed Iqbal and Nahar Monica, in guided conversation with Subrata Kumar Das, Executive Director of the Bengali Literary Resource Centre (BLRC). This interview is presented in the Bengali language, and in partnership with BLRC.

Featured Authors

Subrata Kumar Das, an immigrant in Canada since 2013, is an author and curator. A member of the Writers’ Union of Canada and Literary Translators Association of Canada, Subrata has 29 books to his credit. Subrata’s Bengali book on CanLit has been hugely acclaimed by the Bengali literature-lovers living in Canada and Bangladesh. The initiator of Bangladeshi Novels (bdnovels.org), the first website on Bengali literature in 2003, Subrata is the recipient of Nalanda Best Canadian Bengali Author Award at Canadian South Asian Literary Festival 2023 and Gayatri GaMarsh Memorial Award in 2018. He was shortlisted as Best Canadian Immigrant Award in 2021.

Syed Iqbal (1953) is a writer and contemporary abstract artist. Over the past four decades, he has established himself as a novelist and short story writer. In 2014, he was awarded the Bangla Academy Syed Waliulla Literary Award for his contributions to Bangladeshi literature. As of today, he has written and published 36 Bengali novels and short stories. As a contemporary abstract artist, hes had 18 solo exhibitions in Canada, the US and Bangladesh, and 81 international group exhibitions. He currently resides in Toronto, Canada, and spends his time writing and painting.

Akbar Hussain migrated to Canada from Bangladesh in 1997. Writing has been his passion since he was a studentHis first two books, My Lonely Thoughts in English and Amar Shomoy Amar Poth in Bengali, were published by the Bengali Literary Research Center in Toronto. In 2019, he self-published his biography Hey Mahajiban in BengaliHe loves to explore and understand the mystery of nature and strives to fathom the wisdom behind our creation.

Nahar Monica is a poet, short story writer and novelist. She was born and raised in the northern part of Bangladesh and has a sociology degree from the University of Dhaka and a master’s degree in science from the University of LondonHer published books include Montho Kuup (2019 novel), Dokholer Dour (2019 short story collection), Bisharga Taan (2016 novel), PrishThaguli Neejer (2014 short story collection) and Chandpur e aamader borsha chhilo (2007 poetry collection). Monica’s focus on writing includes her native land, immigrant life in Canada, and their psycho-social aspects. For her, writing is freedom with no boundaries. Monica lives with her family in Montreal, Canada.

Asoke Chakravarty, BOIMELA-UTSAV Award winner, is a poet, writer, artist, playwright, musician, engineer, MBA graduate and humanist who is of Indian origin and has lived in Canada for 55 years. Chakravarty’s written work has appeared in 18 publications, 80 leading magazines across three continents and many international anthologies. His work has been translated to Spanish, French, German, Turkish and other languages. Chakravarty is the founder-director of Krittibas Literary Group of Toronto and was the former President of The International Festival of Poetry of Resistance. His collection of poems Vaater thaalaai eto kaantaajhop was nominated for the Shahityo Academy in Delhi.
