When the matriarch of the Skelf family discovers a human foot while walking the dog, a perplexing case presents itself to the darkly humorous family of funeral directors and private investigators. Toronto-based David Whitton presents Seven Down, his quirky character-driven debut novel, about seven hotel employees puzzling out the events of a botched assassination attempt.

Featured Authors

Doug Johnstone is the author of 12 previous novels. Several of his books have been bestsellers and three, A Dark Matter (2020), Breakers (2019) and The Jump (2015), were shortlisted for the McIlvanney Prize for Scottish Crime Novel of the Year. He’s taught creative writing and has been a writer-in-residence at various institutions over the last decade, including at a funeral parlour. Doug is a songwriter and musician with five albums and three solo EPs released, and he plays drums for the Fun Lovin’ Crime Writers, a band of crime writers. David Whitton is the author of the story collection, The Reverse Cowgirl (Freehand Books), and the novel, Seven Down (Dundurn Press). His short fiction has appeared in a number of journals and anthologies, including Darwin's Bastards, Best Canadian Stories, and Journey Prize Stories. He is a graduate of the University of Guelph Creative Writing MFA. He lives in Toronto, Ontario.

José Teodoro is the author of several works for the stage including Cloudless, which was recently adapted into an audio drama presented by Canadian Stage and Screen Door, which made its debut in December and was recorded by Applied Silence, José’s music/narrative partnership with Stephen Lyons, and will be released digitally and on vinyl this autumn. José is co-author, with Mexican artist Laura Barrón, of Cathedral, a bilingual 3.5-metre-long art-book. José’s literary nonfiction has appeared in publications such as Brick and subTerrain, and his arts criticism has appeared in publications such as Film Comment and The Globe & Mail.
