What makes a family? How does it shape us across generations? Join internationally acclaimed Italian author Donatella Di Pietrantonio and prize-winning Canadian author Lisa Moore to explore the many complex sacrifices, secrets and love stories that make up families. In her latest novel A Sister’s Story (translated by Ann Goldstein, praised for her Elena Ferrante translations), di Pietrantonio revisits the characters in her bestselling novel A Girl Returned to chronicle a moving story focused on the ambivalent, ambiguous, wavering but steadfast relationship between sisters. Moore’s This is How We Love unfolds a young man’s story after he is violently attacked to paints a shimmering portrait of mothers, fathers, sisters and brothers; of children cared for, neglected, lost and re-found.

Featured Authors

Born in Teramo Province, Abruzzo, Donatella Di Pietrantonio completed her studies in the provincial capital, Aquila, and now lives in Penne. Her short fiction has been published by Granta Italy, and her novel, Bella mia, was nominated for the Strega Prize and won the Brancati Prize. A Girl Returned, her third novel, won the Campiello Prize. Festival appearance is generously supported by Istituto Italiano di Cultura.

Lisa Moore is the acclaimed author of the novels Caught, February, Alligator; the story collections Open and Something for Everyone; and the young-adult novel Flannery. Her books have won the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize and CBC’s Canada Reads, been finalists for the Writers’ Trust Fiction Prize and the Scotiabank Giller Prize and been longlisted for the Man Booker Prize. Lisa is also the co-librettist, along with Laura Kaminsky, of the opera February, based on her novel of the same name (2023). She lives in St. John’s, Newfoundland.

Catherine Bush is the author of five novels, including Blaze Island (2020), a Globe & Mail Best Book and Hamilton Reads 2021 pick, and The Rules of Engagement (2000), a national bestseller and New York Times Notable Book. Her books have been shortlisted for the Trillium and City of Toronto Book Awards. Her nonfiction has been published in the New York Times, Brick, Emergence, Noema, and Best Canadian Essays.
