Your mission, if you choose to accept it, is to crack the code!

Someone has gone missing but have they left messages behind? Hidden in books, written on index cards, scribbled on the back of an old photograph; there is a mystery waiting to be solved. Part mystery puzzle, part scavenger hunt, your task is to piece the story together using all the clues you can find, just don’t get caught! Work as a team to rewrite the history books, just be careful which path you choose to go down . . .

The Hidden is an immersive and interactive theatre experience created by Visible Fictions for young people and families. It was first performed at Paisley Central Library (UK) in November 2017. TIFA Kids is proud to present the Canadian premiere of The Hidden during MOTIVE Festival.

Performances will take place at Brampton Library, Chinguacousy Branch, Bramalea Civic Centre, 150 Central Park Drive, Brampton.

Ever wonder what it would be like to pitch a book idea? Crime Writers of Canada (CWC), a national non-profit organization for Canadian crime and mystery writers, will invite a special selection of four aspiring writers to experience the opportunity to pitch their book ideas to a panel of publishing industry experts. The writers will receive constructive, positive feedback on their ideas.

Making the most of our freedom to travel – digitally! Finger snaps at the read to give a warm welcome to some of the world’s leading spoken word poets, gracing the Festival stage live for a spirited performance of rhyme, repetition, improvisation and word play. Featuring artists calling in from around the world, including Australia, UK and the Caribbean, and include Randell Adjei, Marina Alefosio, David Delisca, Shagufta Iqbal, Alicia Sometimes, Alexandra Stewart, Wana Udobang, Ifrah Hussein and Lady Vanessa.

This event will take place on Zoom. A Zoom link will be emailed to event registrants within 24 hours of  start time.

Stories have shaped Turtle Island for thousands of years. Engage with the Indigenous history of Toronto, and reflect on the history between its shorelines. This series of virtual “tours” will bring to the fore the importance of sharing, listening and witnessing Indigenous oral histories and truthtelling. Join us in launching this year’s series with the First Story tour hosts Jill Carter, Jon Johnson and Audrey Rochette in conversation with TIFA Director Roland Gulliver. They will introduce the places and themes and begin to explore the the importance and relevance of storytelling in beginning to reconcile the past.

The modern picture book has become one of the most versatile and popular of literary formats and many of its elements can be applied to longer forms of writing. Through the world of visual storytelling, explore the intricate relationship between text and illustration with celebrated picture book writer Kyo Maclear. With a look at traditional and innovative works and Kyo’s own books and working methods, participants will have a chance to discuss and consider the dynamic interplay of verbal and visual narrative and explore specific techniques through a short writing exercise.

The Humber School for Writers returns to the Festival with a series of daily professional writing masterclasses led by its renowned faculty members. Each 90-minute class will be presented virtually and will focus on a specific aspect of writing craft. Sign up for one or attend them all! All writing levels are welcome.
