Get to know Canada’s Longest-Running Literary Festival

We polled the staff, and what we love best about working for the Toronto International Festival of Authors (TIFA) is connecting with fellow book lovers like you! Many of us had the chance to meet many of you during the 39th edition of the Festival in 2018, by reading your social media posts, and striking up conversations in signing lines, in the Festival Hub and just before the authors hit the stage. Now, we’re hoping this post will help you get to know us a little better–as well as some of your fellow attendees!

Did You Know?

The Story Doesn’t End in October

Although the Festival is our pride and joy, it’s not the only thing we do! TIFA presents author events all year round, including panel conversations, competitions and the Toronto Lit Up series of free book launches. TIFA also partners up on programming with other like-minded organizations to help bring more events to life, such as the Ontario Library Association’s Forest of Reading® and the Festival of Trees™, the annual Book Summit, biannual Canadian Writers’ Summit, The Word On the Street Book and Magazine Fair and more!

You can find a full list of our upcoming activities here.

We Offer Many Opportunities for Emerging Writers

Supporting emerging writers and providing career-building opportunities has been a key initiative since TIFA’s inception. Today, we’re proud to publish up-and-coming writers in TIFA’s The Unpublished City anthologies, recruit them into our annual Delegate Programme, and feature them in many year-round events. Join us this May for a special event spotlighting three debut authors we have our eyes on (details coming soon).

Survey results are in! Thanks for sharing your Festival experience with us.

We Help Propel Canadian Talent Onto the International Scene

TIFA’s International Visitors (IV) Programme welcomes a select group of international publishing leaders to Canada every year during the Festival. The Programme connects influential foreign publishing professionals with Canadian authors, agents, editors, publishers, and the broader reading public. It’s through this programme that we hope to have more works by Canadians published all over the world.

We Take Authors on Tour

Every year, TIFA takes to the road across Ontario and internationally. During Festival season, we run Lit On Tour, an Ontario-wide touring programme to connect Canadian and international authors to communities that don’t usually have access to literary events in the way that cities like Toronto do. With the help of many programme partners, we’ve been lucky to spark dialogue with curious readers across the province, and can’t wait to do it again in 2019!

TIFA proudly hosts Canadian authors at other literature festivals around the globe. By introducing the world to Canada’s top talent, TIFA helps boost demand for Canadian work, advance writers’ careers, and promote business partnerships.

Read about the authors’ international touring experiences in their own words on our blog:

We Love Our Volunteers!

In 2018, hundreds of volunteers helped Festival-goers feel welcome and well-informed while visiting us. Quite a few volunteers lend a hand all year round, during other events and in our office. We truly appreciate their time and wouldn’t be able to bring our events to life without them. Thank you!
