Picture This: #FestofAuthors18 in the Eyes of Jason Loo

Jason Loo is a Toronto-based artist and comics creator most widely known for this work on The Pitiful Human-Lizard, a superhero comic set in Toronto. The series, which is published through Chapterhouse Comics, was nominated for the 2018 Doug Wright Spotlight Award! As one of our #FestofAuthors18 Delegates, Jason has been translating his Festival experience into a series of comic strips. Take a look below!

Black Box Session, Humber School for Writers, Love and Defiance Podcast

The first event that Jason attended was a live recording of the Humber School for Writers’ upcoming Love and Defiance podcast. With an all-black dress code in effect and the room completely shrouded in darkness except for the lights on the stage, moderator David Bezmozgis spoke to Colin Buchanan about Colin’s remarkable journey in writing his first novel.

Panel: Brannavan Gnanalingam, Witi Ihimaera & Maryam Madjidi

Jason next attended a panel comprised of New Zealand’s Brannavan Gnanalingam and Witi Ihimaera, and French-Iranian author Maryam Madjidi. The trio spoke at length about their connection to their respective home countries, the audience that they see themselves writing for, and how their stories and characters are informed by their experiences with displacement.

Poetry Cabaret #1

At Poetry Cabaret #1, comedian/author/actor Seán Cullen hosted a series of readings by some of Canada’s most affecting and acclaimed poets: Joanne Arnott, Catherine Graham, Karen Mulhallen and Paul Vermeersch. Seán infused this celebration of poetry with his signature dry wit, which kept the audience in stitches from start to finish.

Lit On Tour Scarborough: Ins Choi & Tina Makereti in Conversation

For his final Festival event, Jason made his way outside the downtown core to the University of Toronto’s Scarborough campus, where Ins Choi (co-creator, writer and executive producer of the wildly popular Kim’s Convenience) sat down for a conversation with New Zealand’s Tina Makereti, one of New Zealand’s most celebrated writers.
